How the IELTS overall band is calculated

IELTS gives a band from 0 to 9 for each of the four skills. Your overall band is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half band. An average ending in .25 goes up to the next half band, and one ending in .75 goes up to the next whole band. Anything below .25 rounds down, so 6.125 becomes 6.0.

Listening and Reading are marked out of 40 and converted to a band. Writing and Speaking are marked by examiners on four criteria each, and Task 2 counts for twice as much as Task 1 in Writing.

Common questions

How is the IELTS overall band score calculated?

Your overall band is the average of your four section bands (Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking), rounded to the nearest half band. An average ending in .25 rounds up to the next half band, and one ending in .75 rounds up to the next whole band. For example, bands of 7.0, 6.5, 6.5 and 6.5 average 6.625, which rounds to 6.5.

How many correct answers do I need for band 7 in IELTS?

In Listening you need 30 out of 40, in Academic Reading 30 out of 40, and in General Training Reading 34 out of 40.

Are the Reading band tables the same for Academic and General Training?

No. General Training Reading uses a stricter table, so the same number of correct answers gives a lower band than in Academic Reading. Listening uses the same table for both.

How are Writing and Speaking bands decided?

A trained examiner marks each on four criteria and the four marks are averaged. In Writing, Task 2 counts for twice as much as Task 1.

Is this calculator official?

No. It uses the published conversion tables as a guide, and the exact conversion can differ slightly from one test version to the next. Use it to plan and practise, and treat your official result as final.
